The Catholics of France, in 1559, found the Huguenots unacceptable in their kingdom and began a series of eight wars where the Huguenots and the Catholics fought.  There were elements of the royal desire to eliminate the vestiges of the feudal rights nobility and establish the King as the absolute ruler of France, but the battle lines drew up between the two religious groups.  This is a general history of those eight wars of religion.
