First, the author.  J. Colin was an incredibly prolific author.  He had unrestricted access to the French archives and in the pre-WWI period wrote numerous works on French military history.  He was particularly prolific on Napoleonic subjects, but did work on other areas and this is one of them.

As to this work, if you want to know about the French army in the 1744 campaign, or for that matter, at any time in the War of the Austrian Succession, this is the work for you.  It covers:
– Augmentation of the army after the 1743 campaign.
– Recruitment by voluntary enlistment.
– Employment of militia battalions.
– Pioneers.
– Requisition of horses and wagons.
– Artillery material.
– Small arms and equipment.
– Absence of maneuvering regulations.
– Execution of [musketry] fires.
– Use of fire in combat.
– Ordre Profond and Ordre Mince.
– Formations and evolutions.
– Cavalry and artillery.
– Organization and discipline of the infantry and cavalry.
– Staffs of fortresses, Invalids & Militias
And it goes on for another 50 pages from there.
