In 1145 Italy was part of the Holy Roman Empire. When Frederick Barbarossa was elected Emperor Italy was in a state of tumult and opposition to being controlled by the “Germans.” The great cities of Italy broke into revolt and attempted to liberate themselves from the Germans. For a history of a Medieval war it is surprisingly detailed. This work was originally published in 1887.
