In 711 A.D., the Arabs crossed the Straits of Gibraltar and invaded Spain. After crushing the Goths the Arabs began a 400 year occupation of Spain, which ended with the Reconquista by the Christian Spaniards. Though those 400 years are often presented as one of wonderful high cultural development, in fact they were 400 years of almost continuous warfare between Arab strongmen who sought to carve out countries of their own and arguing over the succession of the Arab rulers of Spain, and the Christian Spaniards who fought to liberate themselves from Muslim oppression.
