This is the history of the exploration and conquest of Timbuktu. It is in a most remote part of Mali, where the great bend of the Niger River peaks at the edge of the Sahara Desert. It was a mysterious city until A. Laing, an Englishman, traveled there and was murdered. The second part of this book discusses its occupation by the French and the politics of that act.
