Dumouriez had advanced into Belgium to conquer it and make it part of France. After Jemappes came the battle of Neerwinden. This work covers that battle in detail and the translator has walked the battlefield, inserting photographs of it to bring the story to life for the modern reader. The most exciting part is Dumouriez’s attempt to set himself up as the military ruler of France, to overthrow the Assembly, but it failed and he defected to the Austrians, taking with him as prisoners the French Minister of War and several members of the Assembly. Excellent history of a little known event.
