In 1737 the Holy Roman Empire was in a mutual defense treaty with Russia against the Ottoman Porte.  A war erupted between Russia and the Turks and the Holy Roman Empire mobilized. The Empire sent its army south into Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Bosnia.  There were several engagements and a lot of marching under horrible conditions in difficult country filled with mountains, swamps, and even deserts, but it was all to naught.  The Empire’s prosecution of the war was foiled by court intrigues, petty jealousies, utter incompetence, and even possibly by the corruption of a general as he skimmed money from his troops rations.
