Published in 1778, this work is a proposed system for the use of artillery.  At the time of its writing there was a debate in the proper use of artillery.  Advances in metallurgy and manufacturing techniques had made it possible to bore lighter cannon barrels, which in turn allowed for light carriages, which produced greater mobility.  This offered the potential for a more dynamic use of artillery.

Gribeauval was to soon produce a new system of artillery that took advantages of the new technologies.   Now came the debate on how to use his new guns and du Teil answered with this work.  The concepts that du Teil developed would significantly impact the course of the wars of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era.
