In 1544, continuing the war from the previous year, Emperor Charles V, of the Holy Roman Empire, invaded France from his possessions in the Spanish Netherlands and pushed towards Paris in order to force Francois I, King of France, to the peace table.  Facing little opposition he pushed south taking two small fortresses and began moving down the Meuse to St. Dizier, where he began a major siege.  Victorious in his siege, Charles V continued his march on Paris when his logistical and financial system forced him to negotiate a peace.
