This is a general work, written in 1890, of the Foreign Legion’s organization and history before the Franco-Prussian War. It is the only account I’ve ever seen of the Carlist War in Spain, in which the Foreign Legion played a major part. It also discusses the Foreign Legion in Algeria as well as providing vigniettes of individual legionnaires and short biographies of several of its early commanders.
