In September 1840 the British, Austrians, Russiasn, and Prussians decided that they would assist the Sublime Porte in recovering control of Syria from Mehmet Ali. A combined fleet bombarded Beruit, troops were landed, and the operation was on. The author was present with the British during this operation. The work was originally published in 1842.
