The various princes of India had recognized that the European armies were superior to theirs and decided that they needed to improve their military forces. They did this by hiring European mercenaries. These two volumes discuss the lives and military operations of these mercenaries. The details of the battles are good. The individuals discussed are Generals Benoit de Boigne and General Pierre Cuillier, whose campaigns are discussed at length. Short biographies are provided of Major R.L. Ambrose, Lieutenant Birch, Colonel Louis Bourguien, Captain Butterfield, Major Brownrigg,Major Louis Derridon, Major Dodd, Captain Donelly, Captain Drugeon, and many others.
