The author was a German officer assigned to Damascus in 1912, when he was returning to Germany and found himself in Constantinople when the 1st Balkan War erupted. He was assigned to join a Turkish cavalry division fighting on Thrace. This is the story of his experiences and observations of the Turks as they fought the Bulgarians. It is a most unusual and unbiased account of the problems the Turks encountered as they attempted to preserve that little corner of Europe that they held after the formation of the various Balkan states in the last 19th century.
