In the fall of 1845 Abd-el-Kader, claiming to be the Mahdi, provoked a rebellion among the Arabs of Algeria.  A number of French columns were sent out to crush the revolt.  One column, a few hundred infantry and a handful of cavalry found itself surrounded by thousands of Arabs intent on destroying them.  It was a terrible and hard fought battle that lasted for four days and, at the end of which, the French force was completely destroyed.  This is the French equivalent of the Little Big Horn.
