In 1844 France found desert raiders penetrating into it’s colony of Algeria and sent a military force to address the issue. It set up a base on disputed ground and Morocco responded by declaring a jihad. The Sultan of Morocco called out the tribal forces and moved east. Marechal Bugeaud prepared his force to march into the desert to engage the Moroccans. He used a deception to conceal his movement and caught the Moroccans in their camp. Thousands of Moroccan cavalry swarmed the French formation and discovered that swords, supported by religious fervor were no match for muskets and cannon; that wild hordes of swirling cavalry could not overcome disciplined and regulated European soldiers.
This work contains the French order of battle and illustrations of the battle formations used by the French expeditionary corps. Numerous maps clearly show the movements to the battlefield and on the battlefield.
